UmbrelOS Hardware Requirements

I cannot find any official list of hardware requirements for UmbrelOS. I understand it’s just a ton of docker containers with UI and the final performance depends on what apps are used but it would be nice to have general requirements outline, e.g. for Bitcoin only and apps full of servers.

I am planning to run Umbrel with many apps it offers, multiple nodes, btcpay, media server, etc. What would be recommended if I want to use almost every app from the app center? Is 16GB machine from your store enough even for that?

Umbrel is selling this box. However, I am using a Raspberry Pi 4 8 GB with a 2 TB usb drive. The Umbrel OS requirements are very low due to it being Linux-based. It’s more based on what you want it to do. Each app will require a certain amount of resources and you can never have to much RAM. Also, lots of storage!

Yes I know about the box, as I mentioned at the end of my post. But it feels like it cannot be enough if I want to run everything so I am curious more about per app ram/cpu usage which is missing from the appstore and some example recommendations that should be documented

Put docker on your desktop or VM and see how the requirements change. I use ProxMox on my server and run fun things there. You could even run Umbrel OS! :stuck_out_tongue: I like power, storage, and RAM!! If you have no limits then don’t worry about anything. You will always find a use for it. Another thought would be to buy an off-the-shelf NAS with DDR 5.

That’s exactly my plan! I am building a powerful server and going to run Proxmox there. Do you have it in it’s own KVM or LXC? I am just trying to plan out the server virtual machines to see how much RAM I need to get and considering Umbrel as one of the options for majority of selfhosted apps

I found these in the forums and helpful

I have not done Umbrel OS on PVE. My Linux Kung Fu is too feeble to attempt such a task. Maybe someday with practice.
