The all-new Bitcoin Node, rebuilt from the ground up

Today, we’re launching the completely rebuilt Bitcoin Node app for umbrelOS.

It started with a simple question: What if running your own Bitcoin node wasn’t just easy, but a genuinely beautiful experience?

This is the result: https://youtu.be/rXlm1w2b6pk

The update is now available in the Umbrel App Store to all umbrelOS users.

Not only does it look fantastic this thing is a total game changer. Bitcoin has never looked this good almost too pretty to run in the background :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Does look amazing. But sadly won’t stop me from changing from Knots.

Everyone, if you care about Bitcoin being the new money. Run Knots now.

What the hell? This is Bitcoin Core. It was bad enough before but at least you disclosed clearly in the notes this was Core and the actual Core version number. Now you briefly mention Core but strongly imply it is an Umbrel product and are hiding the Core version. If I was uncharitably I might suggest you are getting some kickback from Core for doing this.

It’s certainly not something I would expect from a company pushing “self sovereignty”.

Poor behaviour.

@goldbug

This is Bitcoin Core. Always has been. No tricks no kickbacks no marketing games. Just a better interface so more people can actually run it. If that offends your idea of sovereignty maybe double check what that word means. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

He’s got a point. It doesn’t even say what version of Core this is… I don’t want to have to download that to find out.

What’s that supposed to mean? People run a bitcoin node for a specific purpose and its simplicity itself to download and run nodes on platforms like Umbrel or Start9. The changes haven’t been made to enable people to run it.

I know what self-sovereignty means - making a choice for yourself, not just running what a big corporation pushes in your face. Not knowing the version of software you are running is very important when it comes to Bitcoin nodes, especially at the moment with what is going on with spam filters.

If Umbrel is just going to start behaving like the big centralised tech corps that it started out telling us we needed to remove ourselves from, it’s not going to get very far.

You are free to run Bitcoin Core however you like. That is the whole point. Umbrel does not force anyone to do anything, it simply makes Core more accessible to people who do not want to live in the terminal or mess with config files. That is not a loss of control, it is an invitation.

And yes, the Core version is currently not shown, fair point and something Umbrel will very likely fix soon. But turning a better user interface into some kind of corporate conspiracy is just absurd.

Umbrel is bringing Bitcoin to more people, and that is what real self sovereignty looks like.

I received a notification to update Bitcoin Core to v1.02 but the latest one is v29.0 which I already have it installed. Is this an Umbrel own version of Core?

From what I can tell, it’s Umbrel’s GUI over Bitcoin Core. It makes it look fancy while incorporating some CLI functionality.

Does this mean no more support (updates to Bitcoin core in Umbrel)?

Hey @isvanmc

The 1.02 version is actually Umbrel’s own UI version. The Bitcoin Core itself is still 29.0, which you’ve got installed. Umbrel always runs the official Core, just the UI has its own versioning.

No worries! Umbrel will keep updating Bitcoin Core regularly. The UI version number is separate and just for the Umbrel interface. So your Bitcoin Core stays up to date with all the latest improvements and fixes.

Great.
Thank you Denny.
