Just wondering if I should just bite the bullet and buy a Start9 Server One?
Is Umbrel able to get more stable? Seems like a lot of issues are being found by a lot of people.
Just thinking that running a bitcoin node should be a slam dunk but it’s not.
Hi, I can understand your frustration when setting up a system, and it doesn’t work as expected. But I’d like to speak up in defense of Umbrel:
I’ve been running my Umbrel (Umbrel Home 2023) server for quite some time now and have had no issues at all – neither with the Bitcoin node nor with any of the apps. The setup is fairly simple, and as long as you use the recommended hardware, everything runs smoothly.
Of course, Umbrel is an open-source project, and there will always be users who run into challenges – often due to specific setups or apps. However, the community is incredibly helpful, and the developers are actively working to improve the system.
I was running my umbrel node for a few years on a raspi 4 and had no issues. When it finally died for some unknown reason, I decided to upgrade to a new raspi 5 with a NVMe 2TB drive. It was slower than expected to sync the bitcoin node but ok. But now, with the app store install of Electrum completely failing and now Fulcrum slowing to a crawl I have doubts. I’m a software developer with 40 years experience so I know how software can devolve over time if developers and managers are not careful. With so many moving parts it appears that Umbrel might be suffering from “too many moving parts”. Is there any technical documentation on how to configure the apps like Electrum or Fulcrum?
I needed Umbrel to run my own node and mine to it. Later I found out I could not add extra storage. 2. My miners (Nano3) do not work with the Public Pool offered by Umbrel and they are not fixing it to my knowledge.
I just bought FutureBit just for the sake of CkPool on it and GUI for my miners solo mining to it. Yes, overpriced 100% but I treat it as if I would hire a guy to set everything up for me.
Very few issues, with hardware, OS, or apps. Use the hardware they recommend.
Second half of 2021 I ran the seventh most globally-routed LND node (Thunder_RR) on a small Raspi4, using Umbrel 0.3.9, until it finally died (reason unknown). Always backup your configs/data, and stay realistic about hardware reqts.
