Do Invidious and Nitter No Longer Work?

I’m on Umbrel OS 1.2.2 with Invidious 2.20240825.2 and Nitter 38985af.

In the case of Nitter, nothing loads regardless of any search term I input. A bit of googling reveals a statement on the project’s GitHub that “nitter is dead”

In the case of Invidious, I can’t play any video (either in a logged in or logged out state) and receive the error message, “The media could not be loaded, either because the server or network failed or because the format is not supported.” I’m unable to find and modify any setting that has an impact on this error.

Is anyone else having this same problem? Wondering if this is a “me” issue or an issue with the projects themselves

Invidious has stopped working for me as-well lately.

Both of them are broken in the exact same way on my side.

I mean it kind of makes sense that Nitter broke after Elon went in and Musked all over it but I’m more curious about the Invidious thing. Either way if they’re broken and won’t be fixed they should be removed from the App Store.

Invidious is doing battle with Alphabet, one of the biggest evil corps out there. No wonder it’s getting heavily nuked.

There are still ways to get it to work. Nadeko has a functioning instance, and recommends generating unique po_tokens, so you could try that (see here Generate a po_token and visitor_data for inv.nadeko.net - Fijxu/invidious - nadeko.net Git Server).

However, YouTube is definitely playing whack-a-mole with frontends like Invidious, Piped etc. and many are failing - they need the ad revenue or their business model dies. The more they force ads, the more people turn to alternatives, hence the fierce battling.

Regarding Nitter. It seems to be a similar story - although Musk accredits bot farms with putting undue loads on servers, which could be true. Either way they have fully closed off their API structure making it much harder for someone to fix Nitter or make an alternative.

One existing method I use is xcancel . com, not sure if it uses the nitter model but it has a strong anti-bot procedure which proabbly helps keep it alive. Please don’t ruin it though lol!

tl;dr self-hosted instances or invidious / nitter are too slow at updating to keep up with the whack-a-mole methods to shut them down. the future is not bright for a stable inv/nitter but alternatives exist.

keep fighting the good fight!

Can the Nitter app be updated? There are new websites doing the same thing now: https://xcancel.com/

The Nitter project is no longer maintained and has become non-functional due to changes in X’s API. As a result, it has been removed from the Umbrel App Store:
