What is the realistic SSD capacity needed for UmbrelOS and Bitcoin Node?

I have a 128GB SATA SSD and a 512 GB SATA SSD on hand. I already know that 128 GB is not enough space to run UmbrelOS and Bitcoin Node for synching the blockchain.

My question is…if I can’t install and run using an HDD (spinning rust), would my 512 GB SSD be enough? SSDs are currently overpriced and unavailable, if I had to buy a new 2TB SATA SSD.

Please and Thank you.

The bitcoin blockchain is about 750 Gb nowadays, so you should at least have 1 Tb, but realistically speaking 2 Tb should be the right choice, otherwise you’d have to change it really soon

On my Umbrel I had to replace my 1TB SSD with a larger one, because it was full (Umbrel + Bitcoin Node + Electrum Server). So I agree with @Pinipon88 that realistically a 2TB SSD is required.

Thanks to you both for your very clear and thoughtful responses. They are greatly appreciated.

“My kingdom for a 2 TB SSD!”

I don’t know where you’re based, but it shouldn’t be too difficult or expensive to get a 2TB SSD, it should be around 200 USD on Amazon or any computer store

I live in Ottawa, Ontario Canada.

2TB and higher capacity SSDs have nearly doubled in price (A.I. tax), and are mostly out of stock.

People are selling used or “refurbished” SSDs on eBay to the highest bidder, as they are scarce.

Thank you for your assistance with my posted issue.

Indeed! This is the 6 months price chart of Samsung 990 Pro 2TB NVMe in Europe. Crazy!

Yes…it’s as bad or worse for DDR5 RAM, maybe even for older DDR4 sticks too.
