Umbrel Apps Stuck in "Starting," Reboot, and Shutdown Issues, Debug Data Fetch Error

Hello Umbrel Community,

I’m encountering some issues with my Umbrel node, and I’m hoping to get some assistance in resolving them. Here’s a summary of the situation:

  1. All Umbrel apps are stuck in the “Starting” phase.
  2. Attempting to reboot or shut down the node results in the respective screen freezing without progressing.
  3. I performed a reinstallation of Umbrel.
  4. When trying to install apps, they remain stuck at the “INSTALLING” stage.
  5. The reboot and shutdown issues persist even after the reinstallation.
  6. Upon checking the logs from the management interface, I encountered the following error: “Error: Failed to fetch debug data.”

I would greatly appreciate any guidance or assistance in troubleshooting these issues. If anyone has experienced similar problems or has insights into potential solutions, please share your thoughts. Additionally, if there are specific logs or diagnostic information you’d like me to provide, please let me know, and I’ll do my best to provide them.

Thank you for your help.

Best regards,

Hi @tomura

Some troubleshooting logs would be great, thanks!
You can generate them from the settings dashboard on your Umbrel, by pressing ‘START’ under troubleshooting.

Thank you for your response!
I apologize for any confusion in my previous messages. I have already executed Troubleshoot → START from the Setting screen, and as a result, I encountered “Error: Failed to fetch debug data.”
Please let me know if there are any additional steps I should take or things to check.

Strange. Here is another method for generating troubleshooting logs- hopefully this works.

I’ve tried an SSH connection, but I received the following message:

Permission denied, please try again.

Does this mean that my password is incorrect?

I ran sudo ~/umbrel/scripts/debug and obtained the following logs. Is there any clue in this log?

Thanks @tomura

Ok doesn’t seem to be anything too major here

Please try the following script and let me know how that goes. You may want to hard refresh the Umbrel webpage once the process completes.

sudo ~/umbrel/scripts/stop && sudo ~/umbrel/scripts/start

Thank you for your support!
However, in the end, I resolved the issue by reinstalling Ubuntu and Umbrel.
It works well now.

I seem to have the same problem.

I noticed that when I tried to SSH into the umbrella using the password I set up when I originally started the device it didn’t work, however, when I used “umbrel” per your post it worked.

I got a lot of errors when I rans the debug script.

Can someone help me figure out how to fix them?

Hi @austin Apologies for the delayed response.

Feel free to post those logs here. You can use https://pastebin.com/ if that makes it easier

I figured out how to get the Umbrel to work; however, when I SSH into the device, I still use the default password.

Whenever one of my apps gets stuck on Starting… I connect the the server via SSH and manually restart it.

I’ll use the Tailscale app as an example.

Once connected to the server run the following command:

sudo docker ps

This will list all the containers running on docker showing you a table.
Under the NAMES column identify the app you want to restart and copy it’s name.

Then run the following command:

sudo docker container restart app_name

That’s it. Go on your http://umbrel.local and the app should be running.
