I am re-flashing the microSD card because I am having trouble logging in after I moved. It is so slow.
I have read on here that this will not result in any data loss because all user data is stored on your external drive (SSD or HDD). However, on Raspberry Pi set up instructions via Umbrel it states “Any existing data on the SSD will automatically be deleted when you turn on the Raspberry Pi.”
Which is correct? I have a bitcoin wallet and lightning channels I want to easily restore.
You don’t need to worry about losing data on the SSD after a reflash. It’s also listed here on the official guide, it’s the third bullet point under “Simple Solutions” Official Umbrel Troubleshooting Guide and FAQ
This is in reference to the initial setup it formats the SSD in ext4 if there is not already an installation detected, only when you’re first running through that setup process. Thanks for bringing this up I can have the team look into rewording this section… if there is already an installation and you already ran through the setup you can safely reflash the MicroSD with the latest version of Umbrel OS and it will take you straight to your dashboard. I just did it with mine too and logged right back in!
In the case of any catastrophic hardware failures or anything else as long as you have your 24-word seed phrase as well you shoudn’t need worry about recovering as well, for peace of mind you can see the automatic recovery steps here too: https://twitter.com/umbrel/status/1562099972547690501
Hi guys, unfortunately I have reflashed my microSD and now it seems like Umbrel is not recognising the previous Bitcoin node, which is eating up my storage space. The previous blockchain shows into the “Umbrel system” category. I only have 1 TB of data and the system is taking already 600GB. When I added the Bicoin Node app again, it started to sync the blockchain from 0%.
Also, I had some lightning channels open and it all seems to have disappeared.
What can I do to recover the previous data and setup?
Thank you in advance,
I have the exactly the same issue as @mindsstudio has.
First, I tried to update Umbrel OS from 0.4.18 to 0.5.0 but it failed multiple times when doing in UI and command line.
Finally, after reflashing all the way to 1.2.2 all at once, all apps were gone and needed to be reinstalled. On top of that, it did not find my Bitcoin blockchain that was 100% downloaded and started syncing it again from the beginning.
After some research, it seemed that the directory that was being used was different. Also found people doing reindexing, it’s in the middle of it for me as well. I hope that it reaches 100% soon.
Many difficulties along the way, including the failed updates, losing the path to the blockchain and needing to reinstall the apps. I’ll be here complaining if the reindexing doesn’t go smoothly…
Good news, I was able to do the reindexing trick, and it took maybe 24 hours to complete. For some reason, it had “lost” 20% of the synced blocks somewhere, so Umbrel had to sync that missing part. And for some reason during the syncing it didn’t take more space either, so maybe, just maybe it wrote over the existing sync data… who knows. But now this works.
However, another issue with Lightning Node. I had a fresh file of backup of channels. After recovering (=closing) the existing channels, the balances of the on-chain and lightning wallets were totally bizarre. When I typed the 24 recovery words in Blue Wallet, it found the on-chain funds immediately, but even after waiting a few days, nothing was ‘restored’.
