New Device unable to download bitcoin node

Hi everyone, I just received my new umbrel device. I am a total noob here so hopefully someone can help me. I tried to click install bitcoin node icon and it immediately says ‘not running’. I tried restarting etc but no luck.

did you let it a few minutes to finish installing?

It won’t even start downloading when I click the install icon. It’s the same for all apps. So frustrating

axz21,

Welcome to the community. Has there been a change in your Umbrel device?

What do you mean change in my device? It’s brand new and strangely unable to install any apps from the App Store

Did you use umbrel.local to access the node from another computer with the browser?

Yes I did.

Assuming everything is working properly on your local network, you have 2 options.
1.- Attach the umbrelos log here to try to identify the problem you have.

2.- Since you claim that your device is new and you have not been able to install any apps, it is assumed that you do not have anything installed/stored there. Go to settings/advanced settings and factory reset the device.

Personally, I would choose option 2 directly and try it.

If you continue with the same problem, then I would go to the logs.

Thanks for helping. I have just performed the factory reset via advanced settings. It still does not allow me to install the bitcoin node app or any other app in the app store. Everytime i click install it flips to ‘not running’. How do I obtain the logs to post it on here?

Logs are obtained by configuration/troubleshooting…
You should only have access to the umbrelos log because you don’t have any apps installed…
It will show you the log content on screen and you should have a download option at the bottom of that same screen…
Download it to your computer and then attach it here…

Any other details you can provide can help find the cause of the problem. For example, what type of connection your node uses (WiFi, ethernet), do you connect directly to your router or is there a network device in between, etc.

Wow, thanks Jofraprez, appreciate your sincere help. I managed to factory reset and tried installing the bitcoin node app again but it failed. This is the log i managed to download.

Node is connected via ethernet direct to router. I connect directly to router as well via ethernet.

there are no logs for the bitcoin node app as it could not install.

umbrel-1740105147308.log (4.1 MB)

I’ve been looking at your log and found several errors. There is one in particular that may be the cause of the rest of the errors. I’ll show you.

Feb 21 01:50:30 umbrel umbreld[1197]: Error response from daemon: unknown:

408 Request Time-out

Feb 21 01:50:30 umbrel umbreld[1197]: Your browser didn't send a complete request in time.

This error repeats every time your umbrel tries to synchronize the time and when you try to install bitcoin-core. To explain it easily with an example, when you try to install bitcoin-core, your device sends the request but never receives a response from the outside as if something was “filtering/blocking” the connection.

This may be due to the type of configuration your ISP uses to provide you with internet or some “strange” configuration in your router.

If you’re okay with it, let’s go from simple to complex. Before doing anything, read everything carefully and ask if there is anything you don’t understand.

  • Log into your router and verify that the DNS is not your ISP’s. I don’t know your router but they are usually all very similar and only the name they use and the graphical interface will change.
You have to look for a section that says “Connection” and it will show you the IPv4 and IPV6 settings.

You only have to change the DNS in IPv4 and IPV6 to use Cloudflare’s.
It should appear as Primary DNS and Secondary DNS.
Here is what you have to edit in each section.

IPv4
Primary DNS: 1.1.1.1
Secondary DNS: 1.0.0.1

IPv6
Primary DNS: 2606:4700:4700::1111
Secondary DNS: 2606:4700:4700::1001

Don’t worry, this will not impact you negatively. It means that your router will stop using the DNS servers that your ISP uses to filter all your traffic and spy on you and will use Cloudflare’s, which are usually faster and more global.
If after doing the tests you want to go back to your ISP’s DNS servers, then just write down what you had configured and do the same process in reverse.

  • If your router has an option to set the time, check that the time is set correctly for yours. It should be something like “Network Time”.

  • While on the router, make sure that there is no rule activated that is preventing your umbrel from communicating correctly with the outside world.
Your router should have a section called “Security”. Check that in that section there is no rule activated such as Device Filter, Site Filter, Service Filter. If there is any rule activated, it should indicate an IP where it runs. Take note of the IP.

Once this is done, restart your router

While your router is rebooting, go to your umbrel.

  • Go to umbrel.lolcal, settings and make sure the WiFI option is disabled.
  • Right there, in settings, go to advanced settings, make sure the Cloudflare DNS option is enabled.
  • Restart your umbrel

Once both router and umbrel have started, try installing bitcoin-core again.

If the problem persists, attach another log to see if it gives us any further clues.

Thanks for the clear instructions!

Im no network geek as well but i gave what you instructed a go. I am on a home mobile broadband tp link router. It’s quite hard to navigate some of these settings. I think i managed to change the IPV4 settings (see attached screenshot) but hard to know if i am allowed to change the IPV6 settings. Maybe it’s a limitation of being a mobile broadband customer? I dont know… Any help would be much appreciated.

It seems to be a “limitation” of your router. Forget the IPv6 part. It is assumed that your router will use IPv4 DNS.
Finish the process and test it.

Even though i put your instructed parameters for IPv4 and saved and restarted the router, it didn’t ‘stick’. Maybe it is as you said that its ‘limited’ by my ISP as the modem is supplied by them…

HOWEVER, seeing that this appears to be more of a networking issue as you have pointed out, I decided to plug the log into Grok being the noob i am. It suggested I try a different network. So I decided to use my mobile phone as a hotspot for the Umbrel home device. WELL WELL, it finally installed!!!

After installation, i shut down the umbrel, reconnected the ethernet cable to the home router and the bitcoin node started synching!

Thank you very much for your patience and help man! Hopefully this will help someone in the future too.

Much appreciated!

Good for you. That was a clever and smart move on your part.
Just remember that you will probably run into these kinds of issues when updating and/or installing other apps.
The problem is that your ISP filters/blocks, if not all, some of the traffic between your umbrelos and the servers that umbrel uses.
Well, as long as it works, that’s one problem less.

Noted on the advice! Indeed, i could update the Umbrelos to 1.3 via Ethernet but anything else via the App Store is blocked. Really a silly situation. Getting on the phone with the isp support staff is usually a waste of time and effort. I guess I have to use this method as a work around for the time being.

In any case, thank you so much again for your help and support. Gave me back my confidence in the product and community. Appreciate the patience and advice. Hopefully, I won’t need to take up your time again in the future but if I do, I know I’m in the right place.

Cheers buddy!
