I was running umbrel ~0.5.3. Noticed it wasn’t working — I tried logging into umbrel.local in a browser and got stuck on the white page with the logo and a spinner, I also couldn’t reach it via ssh.
I couldn’t trouble shoot it and knew I needed to upgrade to 1.0 manually anyway, so I flashed my microSD hoping the new OS would fix it. I could log on to the umbrel.local gui now.
However, it asked me to make a new login, and it doesn’t seem to have any recollection of the data on my SSD including my sync to the chain.
Now, when I try to even install bitcoin core via the gui, it just temporarily goes to install 0% on the button and then reverts back to the install button.
When I SSHed into it, it warned me about known_hosts and I tried to edit the file manually. That enabled me to ssh in and run debug.

If I really need to — I’m willing to resync but I’d rather not, is this fixable?
This morning I tried to explore docker-compose being the issue. I tried to ssh a list of apps which was empty, and using the following command, it only returned ‘false’ umbreld client apps.install.mutate --appId bitcoin
I am having this EXACT SAME ISSUE!!! Can anyone please. help? I bought a brand new home device almost a month ago now and it still will not work. It failed several times trying to install to 1.1 even but after about 6 tried it actually updated but exact same results trying to install anything after that even…
Im kinda confused why it says Im still on 5.3 in the debug but when I login via gui settings it says 1.0? Can anyone help with this issue, if not, I can do a clean install but that doesnt seem straight forward either?
Can you please share your system logs? On umbrelOS 1.1, you can go to Settings > Advanced Settings > Terminal > umbrelOS. Then paste the following command and hit Enter:
sudo journalctl | sudo tee /usr/local/lib/node_modules/umbreld/ui/log.txt > /dev/null
It will ask you for your login password, just type the password (it’ll be hidden as you type it) and hit Enter.
Here it is … Is it odd I ran this at 9:30 in the morning but the log entries at the bottom says 14hundred (2pm) …? Can that maybe be my problem here? Clocks are inconsistent.
@cryptogoody - sorry just to confirm, you’re running umbrelOS on a Raspberry Pi 4, right? That’s what the logs suggest. Just wanted to double-check that you don’t happen to have two Umbrels on the same network, as I probably mistook “home device” for “Umbrel Home” in your message :
Your issue seems to be this:
Error response from daemon: Get "https://registry-1.docker.io/v2/": net/http: request canceled while waiting for connection (Client.Timeout exceeded while awaiting headers)
Most of the apps in the Umbrel App Store are hosted on Docker Hub, and it looks like your device is having trouble connecting to Docker Hub download an app. Would you be able to double-check that there’s no firewall or network rules that block Docker Hub on your network? In addition to that, you can also try to do docker pull <an-image> on any computer attached to the same network to see if you’re able to download it, so we can isolate if it’s a network issue or a device/configuration issue.
@fontoshi, your issue seems to be different. This is the relevant error from your logs:
May 03 07:20:11 umbrel umbreld[5765]: unable to get image 'getumbrel/tor:0.4.7.8@sha256:2ace83f22501f58857fa9b403009f595137fa2e7986c4fda79d82a8119072b6a': Error response from daemon: stat /var/lib/docker/overlay2/0d8a3abcd8b6208ea133816251df2450854d90bcdcad8c05e9f909f5987bc665: no such file or directory
I’ll need some assistance from our engineers here to figure out the correct fix. Sorry I don’t have good news right now. Considering the weekend, is it cool if one of us gets back here with our findings by Monday?
Yes, thank you for looking into it.
Yes, you are correct about PI-4. The entire story is I was running bitcoin core for the past 1.5 years on pre Umbrel 1.0 with no issue. I also had a few other apps running as well. When 1.0 came, I flashed the card using Belena and immediately got the problem I can’t download PLUS all the existing apps said stopped. I thought for a minute and decided to buy the upgraded home device as I’m not big into coding and terminal and all that. I plugged it in and didn’t even worry about transferring or anything … just a fresh install of core and redownload of blockchain no problem … except i got the EXACT same error as the PI-4. Now after almost a month of not getting this to work I’m sending the home device back for a refund and for now just seeing if I can get the PI-4 working and if I do, I might upgrade at some point after that. I feel it is the new OS that is the issue. I turned off firewall, AV, … everything I knew before sending it back and still no changes. Even William from Umbrel remotes in and couldn’t get it working. I’ve also seen a few others here in community give EXACT same issue so it can’t be JUST me or my network ???
So, when you say do “docker pull ”, can you be a little more specific? I know terminal somewhat but not great with coding and such really. I don’t know what docker is exactly.I have a 27inch iMac desktop (intel based). Thanks, Jonathan
Hey @fontoshi, thanks for sending along your logs. Sorry for the frustration.
Im kinda confused why it says Im still on 5.3 in the debug but when I login via gui settings it says 1.0? Can anyone help with this issue, if not, I can do a clean install but that doesnt seem straight forward either?
You can completely ignore the first logs you posted where you SSH’d into your Umbrel running 1.x and ran the debug script. That debug script is a legacy script for umbrelOS 0.5.x and does not work on umbrelOS 1.x. It will always return “0.5.3” now and will return a “docker-compose” error.
Before we delve any deeper, could I please get you to re-flash the latest umbrelOS image onto your microSD card and try booting up again? Just in case this was due to a OS corruption issue during flashing.
You mentioned that you had the same issue on a Pi 4 and an Umbrel Home correct? The umbrel Home would have come installed with umbrelOS 0.5.x. Did you have this same issue before upgrading to 1.x?
The reason we suspect it is a local networking issue is because a small number of users have run into this with their local setups in the past where they can’t reach Docker Hub even outside of umbrelOS.
I’ve just DM’d you on this platform to set up a quick call to help you troubleshoot.
To be perfectly honest, when it arrived I plugged it in and thought it was odd that it wasn’t already upgraded to 1.0 so it said upgrade available so I just upgraded from the get-go. I didn’t even think about it and that is why it was such a downer when it didn’t work right off the bat. I setup a slot for this afternoon. I appreciate it and I’ll see you then. If nothing else, maybe you can get me started back with the older version if you can’t get it working.
Hey mate, thanks for replying. So, I went to reflash my microSD and it now seems split into two volumes when I plug in the microSD to my Mac. One’s called CONFIG, the other BOOT A.
Any idea which one I should flash or does it not matter?
Makes total sense that you upgraded right away @cryptogoody!
In advance of our meeting, could you please also reflash your Pi’s microSD card with the latest umbrelOS image for Pi 4 on https://umbrel.com/umbrelos as described here:
That way we can hit the ground running without worrying about past versions.
yeah absolutely, sorry I jumped the gun there. I reflashed it and now I can’t even reach umbrel.local anymore unfortunately, I’ve waited quite awhile for it to install but no luck. I get this error attempting to ssh umbrel@umbrel.local
Hey, that message is expected when you reflash since your ssh credentials will have changed. You need to delete the old credentials from the known_hosts file.
You are on a mac so you can run this in your terminal:
nano ~/.ssh/known_hosts
This will open the file in your terminal. Delete all lines that include umbrel.local. Then save and exit by:
Press ‘Ctrl+K’
Press ‘y’ and then Enter
You should now be able to ssh in.
Alternatively, if you are accessing the file using another method you can just edit it there.
