Inconsistent Access to Umbrel Apps on Desktop vs. Laptop

Hi everyone,

I’m having an issue with my Umbrel server running on a Raspberry Pi. I can connect to it without any apparent problems from both my desktop PC (Windows 10) and my laptop (Windows 11). However, I’m experiencing inconsistent access to the applications.

For instance, older applications like the Bitcoin node open fine on both devices. But, most of the new apps I’ve installed only open reliably on my laptop. On my desktop, these same apps either don’t load at all, or occasionally load after a long delay, leaving the page blank most of the time.

I’m wondering if this could be a firewall or antivirus issue? Both machines appear to have the same configurations as far as I can tell.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot or resolve this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Hey @JoseKlauss

That is quite unusual. Sometimes there can be issues with the mDNS service on some devices when resolving umbrel.local so that could be a factor that plays in to this issue. On Windows devices you can simply try using http://umbrel without the .local suffix which may help.

You may also want to try using your Raspberry Pi’s IP address instead and see if that helps. (You can find it with Fing or by using your router’s admin panel).

Alternatively, I have found from personal experience using Tailscale can help (also makes networking so much easier, especially when running multiple Umbrel devices) as it can resolve the MagicDNS hostnames very reliably and works anywhere which is a nice bonus.

Could you let me know which apps in particular you’re having issues with so I can take a closer look and find out if there’s an issue with the apps specifically or whether it’s just a network problem?

Many thanks,
Alex
