I’ve been running Umbrel smoothly on Ubuntu 22 for quite some time. Today, I decided to follow the new tutorial to upgrade it (unfortunately, we can no longer run it on Ubuntu or Debian). Anyway, I created the bootable device and managed to install it following the guide. However, after restarting and removing the flash USB, it doesn’t boot, stating that there’s no bootable device.
I’ve tried tweaking my BIOS settings, but I don’t believe the issue is related to that. Any suggestions on what might be causing this problem? I appreciate any help.
Actually I was running the Umbrel 0.45 on a Debian 12 machine and worked fine. Today, I wanted to try the new version of Umbrel 1.0, so I made a clean install on my hp elitedesk computer but got the same result: Just a black screen with a blinking white cursor, maybe it wasn’t installed any grub on the disk. As a curious thing, the same thing happened when I tried to installed Start9 on the same computer.
I am having the same issue. I have tried creating the bootable USB drive from 2 different computers, with 2 different downloads and have tried booting to it from 2 different computers and always have the same issue. The BIOS sees the USB drive, but is unable to boot to it. Something wrong with the image?
Hi there, I’ve already given that a shot, but unfortunately, no luck. My issue isn’t with booting from the USB; that part works fine. It’s after the installation process runs its course that the problem arises. The device refuses to boot, prompting a ‘insert boot media…’ message.
I’ve tinkered with the BIOS settings extensively, trying various tweaks, but none seem to do the trick. My machine, an Asus VC60, used to run Ubuntu smoothly.
Sadly, even if this new Umbrel update does work, it undermines the very purpose my machine served. I can’t even connect via WiFi anymore; it’s truly nonsensical.
Thats an Interesting discovery: I have an external HDD/SSD adapter, and I decided to utilize it to install everything onto my SSD. Surprisingly, it booted successfully while connected externally.
But if i place the disk inside the computer, it fails to boot again, I’m increasingly convinced that it’s a compatibility issue with certain drivers, particularly those responsible for reading the disk.
im not talking about making the usb bootable, im talking about the device not booting.

I fixed mine after turning PCIe ARI Support to Auto in my UEFI. it was under Advanced\AMD CBS\NBIO Common Options. After that I reinstalled from USB and tried booting again and it worked perfectly/ Hope this helps
Well, i dont seem to have the same luck as you, Asus VC60 is a old computer, idk if that has anything to do with it, i have the latest BIOS firmware but it is not recent.
I already lost hours around this trying to set it up, it only work from my external disk, and that makes clear no sense.
Would love to hear some feedback from the team.
i have the exact same issue, using the exact same mini computer.
i already tried everything around bios, even tried to update the sdd firmware but it had the latest version.
then connected the ssd externally and it worked, it makes no sense.
Hope umbrel team hleps
i have exactly same issue! SSD will boot if connected external but not if it it pluged internal…
As soon disk ist pluged internaly and i will install ubuntu server, ssd will perfectly boot.
