Upgrading SDD from 1TB to 2TB

I currently use a RPi 4. I understand that I need to clone my current 1TB SSD first. My question: 1. Do I need to create a bootable drive and 2. Do I need to partition my new 2TB SDD. I am using Macrium Reflect software to make the cloned disk. Thanks.

I find your questions a bit confusing. Let’s try to clarify the points.

I understand that at this moment you have a RPI4 with a 1 TB ssd and you want to replace it with a 2 TB ssd.

I assume that you want to clone the ssd so that you don’t lose everything you have installed and just have to remove an ssd and put in the new one.

Now let’s clarify the confusion.

  • If what you want is to clone the small ssd to the large ssd, why do you want to make the large ssd bootable? If what you need and want is to clone the disks, they have to be exactly the same (except for the storage capacity, of course). If you do the cloning process correctly, you shouldn’t have any problems.

  • Why do you want to partition the 2 TB ssd? I’m assuming that you want to change the ssds because you’re running out of storage. Unless there are things you haven’t mentioned, I don’t see the need to partition the big ssd.

  • About Macrium Reflect software I don’t know what to tell you. I’ve never even heard of it. I usually use things like clonezilla for this kind of thing, for example. But if you know and feel comfortable with Macrium, use that one.

Anyway, I don’t know what else to tell you. Maybe if you provide a little more info, we can help you better.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. You’ve answered my questions. The reason why I asked about a bootable disk and disk partioning is because I read somewhere that when you clone a drive, some might do these things. I am an IT newbie so I thought I would ask this question. Just to be on the safe side!

Well… if that clears up your doubts, I’m glad.
I suppose you’ll tell us if everything went well.

For sure, I’ll let know. Thanks again!
