I assume that’s the reason for the thing not being able to start.
It would be very beneficial to me if I could get the thing running again for long enough to transfer any funds that might be stored in the BTC wallet. (for which I have a seed phrase that is very unfortunately not correct).
Can anybody give me advice for how to tackle this?
Yes, I tried Electrum and as you expected it didn’t work (checksum invalid). Right now im trying to restore the wallet using Zeus wallet on my old android tablet, and that’s still working.
I already ssh’d into the pi to see if i could delete something, but im not shure what i can safely delete, so i left everything untouched.
I also tried to open the wallet.dat I found inside the umbrels bitcoin directory using bitcoin core on my pc, but it doesnt show any transactions or addresses. (its also only 12 kb).
I’m a bit confused that the seed-phrase is not BIP 39, because when I set the wallet up, BTC and lightning were still seperate, and the BTC app was able to show the BTC balance. (Later the balance was only to be seen in the lightning app). Plus I’m quite shure I have never used lightning.
Right now I’m still waiting if the Zeus wallet can recover the wallet with the seed-phrase I have. I’ll report back once that has succeeded or failed.
I entered the seed phrase i have in the Zeus wallet, but it shows zero transactions. It should definitely have transactions because I used it.
I’m confused, is this a Bitcoin or a lightning wallet, and if its a lightning wallet, do I need extra information to recover it? All I was able to find out by now is that the seed phrase seems to be a aezeed seed phrase and can only be opened in very few wallets
Im not sure what you are doing. Lightning addresses start with ln if its a lightning wallet it will probably have both a bitcoin and a bitcoin lightning wallet options
bitcoin lightning wallets need more info.
bitcoin regular wallets have different standards as well. bech, segwit, legacy you can tell by what your wallet address starts with 3, bc1, 1, etc
if you have lightning channels open it will require more
I was able to get my umbrel installation running again by ssh’ing into the pi and deleting a bunch of unnecessary stuff from the sd card and the ssd. After that I was able to catch up 4 month of blockchain. It barely fit on my ssd, and if it hadn’t I would have been in for even more trouble, hopefully being able to clone the old ssd to a larger one. I transfered my funds to a real bitcoin wallet, so this ended good for me, but I would say it was a close call.
I had a seedphrase and I thought with that I’m safe, but that totally wasn’t the case. The seedphrase was not recognized as valid by any of the common bitcoin wallets (Electrum, Bitcoin Core). It was valid with Zeus wallet, but there it showed 0 transactions and 0 balance.
Nowhere in the setup process for umbrel was I informed about the fact that my seedphrase was uncommon and that my wallet was basically dependent on the umbrel installation working. If I hadn’t got it working again I would have lost a decent amount of money. I consider this irresponsible from the makers of umbrel to say the least and I don’t think I will ever use umbrel again.
