Umbrel settings wipe after updates

Hello everyone,

First and foremost, I want to express my gratitude and admiration for the Umbrel project. Despite being relatively new to it, I have successfully set up all the services I wanted, making them easily accessible at my fingertips, almost without any issues. The web user interface is particularly enjoyable and user-friendly.

However, I recently updated my Umbrel instance, and some configurations fell behind. I had set up a static IP address, configured Samba mounts for an external hard drive, and applied several OS-level settings. Despite the explicit warning that settings would be wiped after each update, I decided to take the risk.

I believe that many people who opt for a home server solution and self-hosting are power users capable of resolving minor issues as they arise. However, wiping settings with each update seems counterproductive, as it requires us to repeatedly reconfigure everything from scratch.

This experience has led me to question the current update mechanism. I wonder if there is a way to achieve a balance that allows for seamless updates without the need to constantly redo our configurations.

Given these circumstances, I am contemplating whether I should build something on a clean Debian system or similar, rather than relying on Umbrel. The idea of having to invest hours in redoing configurations after every update is daunting, especially when the setups are not particularly unique or complex.

I would appreciate any insights, suggestions, or justifications regarding this matter. Is there a way to preserve our configurations during updates, or perhaps a more efficient method to handle these necessary customizations?

Thank you all for your feedback and support.

I know this isnt what your looking for I just thought I would say this effected me as well.

Unfortunately OS level settings or other configurations are not persistent over Upgrades anymore as stated in the upgrade notes (somewhere I read this).

I fell victim to this even though I was aware I didnt make a complete backup of all my configurations.

I hope they address this.

Thank you for reply anyway! Can you point me to clarification of this step please?
