Umbrel Pro SSD issue

I received my Umbrel Pro yesterday but it will only recognize one of my two SSDs. I have reformatted it to different format options and it is readable on multiple computers. I have also moved it to different slots in the Umbrel Pro but no luck. Any ideas or anyone else with this issue?

What brand of SSDs are working and what is not? I would suspect that it has something to do with that.

Oh … I would also be interested to know, beings you might be the first person to have received one …

What version of umbrelOS does it say it is running?

Hello. I upgraded to 16.1 as soon as I fired it up. For SSD I have WD Black SN750 SE (the one that works) and a PNY CS900 that is not working. I considered resetting to factory configuration and seeing if starting over would discover it.

Yeah, I see that they have 1.6.1 on their github but they have not made a release for it.

Just what I expected. I had a PNY SSD that I could not get to work with umbrelOS … I am using Samsung and Kingston:

umbrel@umbrel PROD:~$ lsblk -d -o NAME,VENDOR,MODEL
NAME VENDOR MODEL
zram0
nvme0n1 KINGSTON OM8TAP41024K1-A00
nvme1n1 Samsung SSD 990 EVO Plus 2TB

Note: I don’t have an Umbrel Home … I am running on a Bosgame Mini PC

Well not great news but I just started with what I had already. I have 2 Crucial P310 2TB SSD coming tomorrow so hoping those will work ok.

I emailed support as well, hoping they may know something but with the Pro being so new I don’t know that much will be known

Not sure what the cost different is but there is a big performance between them!

Thanks for the info! I received a quick response from Umbrel support so I am working through their list of suggestions right now, will let you know if it works

If they gave you a list of supported SSDs … it would be good to share for others to know too!

All they told me: Umbrel Pro supports any M.2 2280 NVMe SSD up to 8TB - PCIe Gen 3, Gen 4, or Gen 5 . I told them they probably need to update the PNY issue

Well, it does not support all of them as Boot Drives and has problems with some SSD naming conventions of the physical SSD itself.

As 2nd SSD Slots, I have not had problems but with their new hardware going to support more than 1 SSD Slot, I can see it having a problem if they have not made code updates in their umbrelOS v1.6+ code.

I would put the PNY CS900 in a Windows PC and use their SSD Toolbox to check / update the firmware. Support | Solid State Drives | SSD | pny.com

Interesting, that is new for me but will give it a try

Right idea … I have a USB SSD Enclosure that I can pop a SSD into to do stuff like that!

Hey @Uhuru, just following up here as well. After looking into this, the PNY CS900 is a SATA SSD, not NVMe. The Umbrel Pro’s M.2 slots only support NVMe drives, which is why your Western Digital SSD is detected but the CS900 isn’t.

Swapping the CS900 for any M.2 2280 NVMe SSD, like the Crucial P310 that you’ve got on your way, should get you up and running with no problems.

This is good feedback for us. We’ll make it clearer on our product page that the SSDs need to be NVMe specifically. Hopefully this helps anyone else who runs into the same issue!

Thank you. The Crucial SSD worked like a charm so I have ordered another
