Umbrel OS 1.5 headless Wifi set up

Anyone know how to set up Umbrel headless on a RPi5? I’ve tried the wpa_supplement.conf method and the network.env method ChatGPT gave me but am struggling.

Basically I have Umbrel 1.5 installed on a RPi 5 and I’m not able to attach the Pi to ethernet.

Please no ChatGPT or AI generated replies.

Do you have the drivers installed for the wifi? does it show as a device?

The wpa_supplicant.conf method should work

Also I’d recommend you to use a SSID name with no spaces or special characters, just use Unicode Characters

You’re missing the part where I mention that its headless.

Not working as per my post.

Not at all. I remember this being a thing; I could be wrong. Include the drivers with the image on the SD card. Using a keyboard and monitor. Install the driver, configure it, and you should be good. Be creative and not close-minded.

Sorry I cannot help you if you don’t give us any detail, the solution I posted before worked fine for me for a headless RPi.

That’s the whole point of a headless set up. You don’t need to connect anything to it other than power. Hence the word “headless”.

It won’t do you much good if you don’t also connect a Network. Worst comes to worst, using the physical Ethernet port first, just for setup. Then you can ssh to your umbrel from another PC and complete the Wifi setup, then disconnect the LAN.

But last time I installed umbrel, the raspi pi imager software let me make all the necessary WiFi settings even before writing the OS image to the SD card for initial startup.

Have you tried with wpa_supplicant + systemd service + dhcp?

You will need to use a terminal or login locally to Umbrel via SSH or comm port.

Use;

sudo nmcli device wifi connect (SSID) (password)

Use a known ssid in the area shown, and the password for that ssid… it will auto connect after reboot as well…
