The new 2.0 update broke my Crafty Controller community app

I downloaded a community app Crafty Controller from GitHub — Brcly’s Community App Store for Umbrel — and it worked perfectly fine. The issue was that the app requires HTTPS, so all I had to do was access it through an HTTPS connection in the URL. Now it completely doesn’t work and just gives me “ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE.” Can anyone help me fix this problem? I don’t really understand how to fix it. I assume it’s because Umbrel can now access both HTTP and HTTPS based on the setting I saw.

hey, I checked the community app’s config, and Crafty exposes its own HTTPS connection on port 8443. Could you try opening https://YOUR-UMBREL-IP:8443 directly from a device on the same network, replacing YOUR-UMBREL-IP with your Umbrel’s local IP address? Use the IP rather than umbrel.local or the app shortcut for this test.

You might get a certificate warning since Crafty uses a self-signed certificate. That’s expected when connecting directly to your own server at that address.

If that still gives ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE, could you share the URL format you’re using and Crafty’s troubleshooting logs? Remove any passwords or tokens before posting. That should help narrow down whether it’s an access issue or Crafty isn’t starting. I’d avoid uninstalling it for now so you don’t risk your Minecraft worlds.

Hello, I tried connecting directly to my Umbrel’s local IP address as you suggested, but I get the exact same error.The only way I’ve managed to get the servers working again is by bypassing Umbrel’s firewall using a private PuTTY tunnel. I set localhost as the tunnel’s entry point on port 8080, then access localhost:8080 in my browser. This routes the traffic through the tunnel directly to the Crafty application, bypassing Umbrel’s network blocks. Other than that, I’ve tried pretty much everything I can think of, but nothing else has worked.

…which makes me think that Umbrel doesn’t like Crafty providing a self-signed SSL certificate.

Could you share the destination from PuTTY’s SSH → Tunnels screen? The bit I’m interested in is where localhost:8080 forwards to on the Umbrel side, something like localhost:8443 or a container IP. That should help narrow down why one route works and the other doesn’t.

@SyberiaK your error is a useful clue too. With that proxy config, Umbrel is reaching Crafty but rejecting its self-signed certificate. That’s separate from the browser’s certificate warning, so accepting the warning in your browser won’t fix that particular error. I’d flag it with the community store maintainer and include the config and error you posted here.

@aidencole I’m afraid my issue can be only solved by the Umbrel team because, by design, Crafty Controller doesn’t work with HTTP, and there are definitely other apps that have a similar security principal.

Crafty currently exposes its self-signed HTTPS endpoint directly and uses a hard…coded `https://umbrel.local:18443` launch URL. This breaks access through umbrelOS 2.0's app proxy. This PR routes Umbrel's app proxy to an internal HTTP Nginx endpoint, which connects to Crafty over HTTPS. Certificate verification is disabled only for that internal self-signed upstream. Crafty's own login remains in place. Changes: - Update Crafty from 4.5.4 to the latest stable 4.11.0 and pin the verified multi-architecture registry digest. - Pin the Nginx 1.30.5-alpine image by multi-architecture digest as well. - Preserve the existing Crafty container name, all five persistent data mounts, and Minecraft ports. Hand web access on port 18443 to Umbrel's app proxy. - Preserve WebSocket upgrades, forwarded host/protocol headers, and large uploads. Adjust Crafty 4.11.0's hardcoded WebSocket URL in HTML to use ws/wss according to the browser's protocol. - Resolve the upstream through Docker DNS so container recreation does not leave Nginx with a stale address. - Store the Nginx configuration in `hooks/nginx.conf`, which Umbrel copies on upgrades as well as new installations. Run Nginx as UID/GID 1000 with a read-only root filesystem and temporary files under /tmp. - Use a relative dashboard launch path and update the access instructions and release notes. Validation: - Parsed both YAML files and passed `git diff --check`. - Verified the Crafty release against the official GitLab release API; checked both image index digests against registry response bytes and confirmed amd64/arm64 support. - Tested configuration syntax using the Nginx executable extracted from the exact pinned image. - Passed local proxy tests against a self-signed HTTPS test backend: host/protocol and path/query forwarding, a 2 MiB upload, a WebSocket echo exchange, and HTML rewriting using the actual Crafty 4.11.0 template. The proxy harness adapted filesystem paths, process settings, ports, and the backend address to this environment. Docker/umbrelOS was unavailable, so installation, upgrade, login, and console operation on an actual Umbrel device still need an end-to-end check before merging. Thank you for your work Denny! I can confirm that the web dashboard is functional now, albeit with some issues:

The HTTP version doesn’t support file uploads, trying to upload one results in an error:

…due to the usage of crypto.subtle, which is a part of secure-context-only API in JS, for file hashing. Can be mitigated by switching to HTTPS;
On umbrelOS prior to 2.0 (tested on 1.7.3) the app fails to start up, Umbrel shows an infinite restart.
I understand that keeping the support for older versions is quite a hassle, so at the very least it’s worth adding a warning note to the changelog.

Could you share the container logs from your 1.7.3 installation? That would help identify what causes the restart loop.

Pardon me, the startup fail was caused by my faulty edit of docker-compose.yml (to change the timezone)

The dashboard is accessible through HTTP, trying to access it through HTTPS however returns ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR.

Also it seems like after a restart the app can’t find some assets, including the custom branding ones:

Just to clarify, it’s currently running [server #6], which is proxied through Pangolin, and it is accessible to the public, so the core functionality works just fine.
