There seems to be a bit of buzz around Umbrel on X right now. Several posts and reposts feel like they’re teasing something, and the recent “keep an eye on the dock” post especially caught my attention.
In the short video, there appears to be a new computer/monitor-style icon in the dock.
That made me wonder: Could Umbrel be working on some kind of Desktop Mode?
What makes this theory even more interesting is something @mayank said in an older discussion about HDMI/display output.
Back then, the idea was basically to connect a monitor directly to an Umbrel machine and use the interface locally. He commented that doing this would essentially turn Umbrel “into a PC instead of a home server”. He also mentioned that the idea had been discussed internally, but at the time it would have required bigger changes to the underlying OS. If I remember correctly, he also left the door open to revisiting the idea in the future.
Well… maybe that future is now? 
My theory would be something like:
Umbrel could gain an optional Desktop/Display Mode, where you connect a monitor or TV via HDMI, add a keyboard and mouse, and use Umbrel directly on the device instead of only accessing it remotely through umbrel.local.
That could turn an Umbrel Home or x86 machine into both a home server and a lightweight desktop/media machine.
Of course, the new icon could just be a dedicated Terminal app, a customizable dock, or something completely different. 
But considering Mayank’s old comments, the computer-looking icon, the wording “keep an eye on the dock”, and all the recent teasing on X… I’m starting to think Desktop Mode isn’t that crazy of a theory.
Maybe @mayank can tell us if we’re getting warm.
What does everyone else think? Desktop Mode, Terminal app, customizable dock, or something entirely different?
