Can you add HDMI display output?

Does this mean we can connect external displays?

  • HDMI output: Added local network access URLs to the HDMI display output.

Hey @TheDecentralizedVet, unfortunately not - it only shows the access URLs. For eg. when you connect an HDMI display, it will show:

Umbrel is now accessible at:

This was added so it’s not confusing to people who install umbrelOS on a Raspberry Pi or other system with the display connected, expecting to see the umbrelOS UI on the display.

Would it be feasible to launch a browser in full screen mode with umbrelOS UI loaded?

That’s a cool idea for sure, although it converts it into a PC instead of a home server, but useful for situations where for example you wanna connect it to your TV and browse your media

Would be cool to be able to auto launch into Jellyfin or any user defined app.

I’d be interested in contributing as an optionally configurable setting. Any pointers on how to implement @mayank ?

@mayank thank you so much for the reply and that makes total sense! Also, great product you’ve built so far. I’m loving how easy it is to use as they can make great gifts for others.

Quick question, do you know where’s the best place to suggest new apps, etc for Umbrel app store?

@fractalnetworks thanks so much for offering to contribute! Unfortunately after discussion with our engineering team, we decided that for now we wouldn’t want to risk any major underlying OS changes, since make HDMI out with a GUI we’d need to make several architectural changes, including transitioning to a version of Debian with GUI. This would also inflate the OS size, which would be a challenge given A/B OTA update partitions on Raspberry Pis with 16GB microSD cards are already too space-constrained.

That said, we’ll be more than happy to reconsider later down the line or if there’s a significant demand for this feature!

Thanks @TheDecentralizedVet - glad to hear that! Feel free to browse and open issues with app requests on the Umbrel App Store repository.

@mayank , I’d like to also vote for display. My thought is that it would be awesome if we could display ticker or status data from Bitcoin or Lighting. I purchased a Hyperpixel display not realizing you didn’t support HDMI, but is there a way to perhaps use Terminal to update the OS following these instructions to support a desktop?

Thanks! Will check it out.
