Introducing Files, the new file browser on umbrelOS

umbrelOS 1.4 Beta 1 introduces Files, a new file manager that turns your Umbrel into a full-blown home cloud, along with Korean language support and various bug fixes.

This update will be rolling out today to users enrolled in the umbrelOS Beta Program. To enroll, go to Settings > Advanced Settings > umbrelOS Beta Program.

This is awesome! How long do you expect before beta 2 is out? Will external storage support work for other devices (i.e. our own mini PC that UmbrelOS is installed on)? How about additional internal storage like a second NVME drive?

Great feature!
May I ask what would be the different from using Nextcloud Files, Seafile, or other options?

only umbrel home? pls don’t! i thought the same  i would even pay for this extra feature pls

Sharing ~/umbrel/data/storage would be greate (Paperless puts its “consume” folder there)

Sharing AppData - at least read-only would-be helpful as an uncomplicated way to “make a manual backup”

When is the release date of 1.4. The 1.4 Beta 1 has broken ELECTRS (won’t run or show the icon on the home page). Also, I lost the ability to uninstall any program. Bitcoin Core and Public Pool are running and I was able to apply the latest updates.

Is there a plan to grant external access to Umbrel Files?

Just installed the new version 1.4, and I like it, but noticed that it is only available in local network.

Thanks!

That is already possible with apps like Tailscale.

Are there plans to also bring the External Storage Support to other devices?

When is it planned to support additional internal disks pooling them and other things?

This is a very important and necessary functionality.

My biggest problem with Umbrel was the external storage. Thank you very much. I am not extremely tech savvy so i would really appreciate a guide on the Files feature and how to use it together with the apps, such as nextcloud or bitcoin node.
Thanks.

Best regards,

Something strange is happening to me with the Files app.

If I grab an MP4 file and drag it directly, it saves it correctly in the directory, and I can view it normally afterward.

However, if I have that file inside a directory, what it does is create the directory but leave it empty without any content.

In other words, if I drag directories, it creates the entire directory structure, but empty, without the files they contain.

The problem is that I see files being uploaded within directories, but immediately after the files are uploaded, they seem to be automatically deleted.
The only thing that isn’t deleted is the directory structure.

I don’t think it’s a permissions issue, because everything would probably fail if it were about permissions.

The other strange thing is that if I press the upload button, it lets me select only individual files, but it doesn’t let me select directories to upload an entire directory.
