Hey All,
Umbrel 2.0 is up and running on my custom machine. Nothing fancy. Just an old home PC. Basic install.
My photos are all placed in the Photos folder on Umbrel. Couple different folders in there to try and keep my photos and my wife’s somewhat organized.
Immich is then installed and pointed to that folder as an external library. Library scanned and the photos show up. Quite simple and painless actually.
My problem is the meta data. The dates of the photos are all out of whack and no way in correct order. I have tried rescanning for meta data and that doesnt seem to change anything. Even if I look at the photo in the actual folder structure I get a different creation date than what Immich shows.
Any way to have Immich find the “correct” date? Its not the biggest deal as we kind of just use it for storage and occasionally to find a photo. But on my previous immich install on Truenas I didnt have this problem.
Thanks in advance!
Hey, the “created” date in the folder can be different from when the photo was actually taken. Immich normally uses the date stored inside the photo’s metadata, so those two not matching doesn’t necessarily mean anything went wrong during the move.
I’d pick one photo that’s clearly wrong and compare its “date taken” on your computer with the date in Immich’s info panel. Also check whether there’s an .xmp file alongside it. Immich can use the date from that instead, which could explain why refreshing keeps bringing back the same wrong date.
When you rescanned, was it the external library scan or “Refresh metadata” from the photo’s menu? If it was just the library scan, try refreshing that one photo directly first. Saves waiting on the whole library.
Is the date wrong in the photo’s info panel too, or does it look right there but appear in the wrong place on the timeline?
So I took a look to compare like you said. For some reason I have 3 of the same photo on immich. Only one of which has the correct time stamp. Which you can see in the picture that has ask siri on it. That is the correct info. I dont know how to remedy this or if there is even a way.
The weird thing is this didnt happen on Truenas and its the same photos.
Hmm yeah, Immich can list the same picture separately if it’s in different folders in an external library, or if it’s been uploaded as well as added through the library. They can look identical but have different metadata.
Could you open Immich in a browser and compare the filenames and file locations for all three? Open each photo’s info panel, then click the little info icon next to its filename to show the path. The copy in your screenshot is IMG_0083.JPG. The paths and dates on the other two should help narrow down where the extra copies are coming from.
I’d leave them in place for now rather than deleting duplicates or changing dates. With a writable external library, deleting through Immich can also delete the files from the source folder.
I wonder if there is a known issue with immich duplicate detection cause it definitely is not working. I have no idea how but some photos have like 30 copies of them.
