Hello Umbrel Community,
I’m reaching out after an incredibly frustrating journey trying to get an external SSD to work reliably with my Umbrel Home. I’m hoping to get some advice on a compatible drive before I make another purchase.
The Hardware:
-
Device: Umbrel Home (512GB internal)
-
SSD: SanDisk Extreme® Portable V2, 2TB, NVMe, USB 3.2 Gen 2 (Firmware version 3008, confirmed up-to-date via SanDisk dashboard and website)
-
Status: Brand new, purchased a few days ago.
The Problem:
The SSD works perfectly on other OSes (Windows 10, Ubuntu 24.04) with both NTFS and EXT4 formats, passing all read/write tests. However, when connected to the Umbrel Home, it causes severe instability:
-
Mounting Failures: The drive is detected (
lsblkshows/dev/sda), but any attempt to access it results inInput/output error. -
Kernel USB Errors: The Umbrel system logs are filled with critical USB errors, indicating the connection is dropping:
text
xhci_hcd: Timeout while waiting for setup device command usb 4-1: device not accepting address, error -62 usb usb4-port1: unable to enumerate USB device -
Inconsistent Behavior: The drive name changes (e.g., from
sdatosdb), and the system eventually loses the device completely, requiring a physical reconnect. -
SanDisk Support: We contacted SanDisk, and they confirmed the firmware is up-to-date and offered no further solution.
What We’ve Tried (unsuccessfully):
-
Multiple USB ports on the Umbrel Home.
-
Different USB cables (including the original one).
-
Re-partitioning and formatting on Ubuntu, Windows, and directly on Umbrel.
-
Complete factory reset of the Umbrel.
-
Manual mounting with
fstaband symlinking the/app-data/bitcoinfolder.
Community Intel & Diagnosis:
Searching online, we found that this specific model (SanDisk Extreme V2) has a notorious history of USB connectivity issues, especially on Linux-based systems . The problem appears to be related to power draw instability and USB controller negotiation, not a defect with this specific unit, as it works perfectly on other platforms . The SanDisk support forums are filled with users experiencing identical “fatal I/O error” and disconnection problems .
Furthermore, many users in the Raspberry Pi and Umbrel communities point out that external drives without their own power supply can be finicky. The fact that the Samsung T7, which has a lower power consumption profile, is widely reported to work “like a charm” where other drives fail, strongly suggests a power negotiation or controller compatibility issue with the SanDisk V2 .
The Question:
I’m ready to return this drive and purchase a different one. I want to avoid going through this again.
-
Can anyone recommend a specific, battle-tested 2TB external SSD that is known to be 100% compatible with Umbrel Home? I’m looking for a model where users have completed a full Bitcoin blockchain sync without these kinds of I/O errors.

I’ve seen the Samsung T7 mentioned frequently in the forums . Can users confirm if the T7 (or T7 Shield) works flawlessly for them on Umbrel OS?
Any guidance would be immensely appreciated. Thank you for your time and for maintaining such a helpful community!
