HELP! 2.0 Bricked my Rasp Pi!

I need help recovering access to Bitcoin held in the Lightning Node app on my Umbrel running on a Raspberry Pi 4. The funds are not currently locked in an open Lightning channel, but I need access to the node to recover or move them.

Since around June, I have been re-downloading and syncing the Bitcoin blockchain. After roughly three months, the Pi was only about 80% synced, and the process has taken four or five months overall. Last week, Umbrel became unusable.

This appears to have coincided with the Umbrel 2.0 update, which I did not intentionally initiate. Was the update automatic, and is Umbrel 2.0 supported on my Raspberry Pi 4 configuration? If not, how could an automatic update leave an existing node unusable, especially with Lightning funds involved?

I do not want to reinstall, reformat, delete data, or otherwise modify anything until I know how to protect the Lightning wallet.

I need guidance on:

  1. Recovering access to the existing Lightning Node and funds.
  2. Identifying the seed, (I HAVE MY SEED PHRASE BACKED UP) wallet, and other files that must be preserved before touching the Umbrel installation or drive. I don’t have any channels.
  3. Moving the existing SSD/data to newer hardware without re-downloading the entire blockchain.
  4. Rolling back or recovering an Umbrel installation made unusable after the 2.0 update.
  5. Migrating safely to newer hardware if necessary.

I am willing to pay someone experienced with Umbrel, Bitcoin Core, and Lightning to assist. Please tell me what not to do before recovery. I have not intentionally wiped or reformatted anything and want to preserve the data exactly as it is.

Pi 4 is supported on 2.0, but OS updates are not installed automatically, so I wouldn’t assume 2.0 actually installed just because the timing lines up: Updating umbrelOS | umbrelOS Support

Having your seed backed up is good news tho. If the funds are all ordinary on-chain funds in Lightning Node, with no open or pending channels, they should be recoverable using the correct LND seed even if the Pi won’t boot. LND uses a seed format called aezeed, so don’t assume it can be restored in any Bitcoin wallet (btw please don’t share the words or wallet files with anyone offering help, including in DMs)

What happens when you try to access it now? Does umbrel.local not load at all, or can you reach the dashboard but not Lightning Node? If it’s unreachable, check your router’s connected devices and try the Pi’s current IP address in your browser. Also, do you have a microSD card for the OS and a separate USB SSD for data, and do you remember which Umbrel version you were running?

Before attempting a rollback or migration, I’d preserve an offline copy of the SSD and microSD, ideally with someone experienced helping. Keep the whole Lightning/LND data folder, not just one wallet file, including wallet.db and any channel.db/channel.backup files present. Don’t uninstall Lightning Node or flash an image onto the existing SSD.

Moving to newer hardware may let you reuse the blockchain data if it’s intact, so starting the download over isn’t necessarily required. I’d first establish whether this is a boot problem, a network-access problem, or an app problem, then choose the recovery route without touching your only copy.
