Fedora and Ubuntu VM desktop runing on Umbrel 2.0 admin

I installed Fedora and Ubuntu desktops on Umbrel 2.0 and after the VM install and going through the OS update process it asked for Administrator password and it doesn’t accept my user ID and I can’t find out and documentation on the default Admin password for these VM’s?

Thanks

hey, the password is the one you set when creating the machine, in the “Sign in” section shown below. There isn’t a default admin password.

If you’ve forgotten it and don’t have anything you need to keep in the VM, you can uninstall that machine and create it again with a new password. Just keep in mind that uninstalling it deletes the files inside that VM too.

I have the same issue and, no, it isn’t the password you set on the initial setup screen. That password logs you into the UI (Debian, in my case) but making any changes, like installing software, requires an Administrator password and it doesn’t work.

Essentially it looks like the user set up doesn’t have administrator privileges.

The administrator password is the one you set when creating the VM. Enter it using the US keyboard layout.

If your keyboard uses another layout, some keys may produce different characters, causing the password to be rejected.

No, this isn’t right I’m afraid.

You can click on the ‘display password’ icon so you can see what is being entered, so I know the password is correct. The user password works when logging in but NOT when entering the requested administrator password.

If you check the user details, the user set up in Umbrel does not have administrator rights. To add them requires an administrator password, which we don’t have…

You’re right. Sorry, my keyboard layout suggestion was wrong in your case.

If the password works for login and is displayed correctly, this looks like a permissions issue.

I’m having this same issue, the Administrator account password is not set by us and we cannot use it to adjust anything/install software from App Center.

Update: Use this command to fix it, then log out and back in and it’ll ask for your user’s password: sudo usermod -aG sudo USERNAME

That worked for me too - thanks.
