Edit 1–Sorry, looks like there are several threads on this topic. Any info would still be appreciated, but it looks like there are some potential and/or certain issues to be considered.
After waiting to see how this debate plays out, and giving it some consideration, I’ve kinda decided that this current debate isn’t really super-critical to Bitcoin’s long-term survival, IMO, but I would prefer to err on the side of caution and abide by the KISS rule, which, in this case, would probably say something like “just use Bitcoin for monetary transactions.” And, since Knots is basically a clone of Core, with some modifications to whip those jpegs outa my mempool, I don’t think it’s harmful to switch to Knots.
But, I’m not super techy, and I have a decent amount of funds in my Lightning node. So, I want to ask the following—
If I follow the instructions provided by BTC Sessions in his recent video, is there any risk that the default Lightning app on Umbrel could get messed up, or stop working, as a result of switching to Knots? Are there any risks at all, to funds, assuming I follow the instructions exactly? Will I still be able to connect to my Lightning node via iOS Zeus Wallet app?
I’m going to address your concern regarding potential “loss of funds” in migrating forom Core to Knots. Firstly, your bitcoin is on the blockchain, not your wallet. All your wallet does is manage your transactions and sign spending. From that perspective, there is NO RISK to your bitcoin. Now, there is always a risk when you update any software that something may break, so back up everything first. If you’re a serious bitcoiner, you know how to reinstall your wallet from your seed phrase, right? You should have backups of your seed phrases, additional words or phrases, master fingerprints, script descriptors, pub keys, and derivation paths. If not, that should be your first priority before you do anything. You should be able to recreate your bitcoin funds on ANY bitcoin wallet. Once you are confident that you can recreate your wallet and have done it multiple times, the concern you just posted will disappear.
I won’t discuss any of the pros and cons of Core vs Knots other than to say that if you think that you value bitcoin as the best money on the planet (which it is!) and want to keep transaction fees low, say no to spam. You can just keep running Core and not upgrade to V30 which removes the OP_RETURN limit. Knots is more configurable if you want that. For what it’s worth, the transition to Knots went smoothly for me and took 5 mins. Nothing “broke”. Electrs stopped working for a couple of days while it resynced, but that was no biggie for me. All the best.

I cannot answer any questions about Lightning, but I believe it is extremely important to change from Core to Knots, having rubbish in the BTC blockchain is not part of the real community in my opinion, give bitcoin University a look and study the issue further, travel well
