Vaultwarde Update needed, there is always some issues with the App unfortunately. Its a pitty if you get stuck and all your passwords are safed and you can only access over Tor makes it useless to use.

Hello Again!

I had an issue with connecting to Vaultwarden after the update. I noticed the Umbrel’s “app store” didn’t have the newest version of Vaultwarden from the Github so i had to do a Manual update.

We had two main problems stopping you from logging into Vaultwarden on your Umbrel:

  1. Connection issue (the app couldn’t reach your server)
    Your phone was trying to connect using a secure (HTTPS) address through Tailscale, but Vaultwarden wasn’t set up to accept secure connections properly. We fixed this by enabling Tailscale’s built-in secure web feature (called “serve”) so that your server could properly handle HTTPS requests on the Tailscale address.

  2. Compatibility issue (the “missing property” errors)
    Your Bitwarden app on the phone was newer than the version of Vaultwarden running on Umbrel. Because of this mismatch, the app expected certain information from the server that the old version wasn’t providing. This caused the repeated login errors about missing “MasterPasswordUnlock” and “Identity Token” data.

The Fix:

  • We manually updated Vaultwarden to the latest version (1.35.2) directly on Umbrel, bypassing the slower Umbrel App Store update.

  • Once the newer Vaultwarden was running, it started sending the correct information that your Bitwarden app needed.

  • After that, combined with the Tailscale HTTPS setup, you were finally able to log in successfully on both the phone and web vault.

If I were you I’d install another instance of Vaultwarden instead of on top of Umbrel’s one, so you keep that untouched for whenever they decide to upgrade it. You should use a different port, just check it doesn’t conflict with other apps.
