Subject: Umbrel OS 1.4 Update Issue – Possible GRUB Problem on ASUS VC60

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing a serious issue after attempting to update my Umbrel OS to version 1.4 on my ASUS VC60 (with the latest firmware installed). The system fails to boot properly, showing multiple errors, including:

  • BIOS Error (bug): Could not resolve symbol _SB.PCIO.SATO.S

  • Filesystem corruption on sda4 (group descriptors corrupted, checksum failed for group 82352)

  • Failed mounts for /data, /var/lib/docker, /var/log, /home, and other critical directories

  • Failed systemd services (e.g., systemd-journal-flush, systemd-timesyncd)

  • Root account locked, preventing login

Interestingly, without GRUB installed, the system shows a “Boot Device Not Found” error on this computer. The only way I can boot without GRUB is by using the disk as an external drive connected to another system. However, with GRUB installed, I can boot into the system but encounter the above errors after the update to Umbrel OS 1.4.

I suspect the issue might be related to GRUB, possibly a compatibility problem with the ASUS VC60 hardware or the Umbrel OS update. I’ve already ensured the firmware is up to date, but the problem persists.

Has anyone else experienced this with Umbrel OS 1.4 or similar hardware? Any advice on troubleshooting or fixing this GRUB/filesystem issue would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help.
