Introducing umbrelOS 1.7

This update is available now for users enrolled in the umbrelOS Beta Program. To enroll, go to Settings > Advanced Settings > umbrelOS Beta Program.

umbrelOS 1.7 Beta 1 brings home screen Shortcuts, a built-in text editor in Files, advanced networking controls, network sharing for external drives, 17 new languages, and several performance improvements and bug fixes.

New features

  • Shortcuts: Add shortcuts to websites, custom ports, and Docker containers directly to your home screen, complete with icons and titles.

  • Text editor in Files: Open and edit text files, code files, Markdown, dotfiles, and more right inside Files.

  • Advanced networking: Change your Umbrel’s hostname, choose your DNS server, and set a static IP for ethernet connections, with a built-in confirmation flow to help prevent getting locked out.

  • File sharing in Settings: Enable and manage shared folders more easily directly from Settings. On supported devices, you can now also share external USB drives over the network, just like internal storage.

  • Faster Files: Files now opens faster, remembers your last visited folder, has better keyboard navigation and previews, and feels more responsive overall.

  • More languages: umbrelOS 1.7 adds 17 more languages, including Russian and Simplified Chinese, Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Greek, Estonian, Croatian, Icelandic, Norwegian Bokmal, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovenian, Swedish, and Traditional Chinese.

1.7? I’m still on 1.5 and it says it’s the latest version

Select the UmbrellaOS beta program option

I know it’s in beta, my concern is if 1.7 is in beta, where is 1.6?

Ah, you’re right, they skipped a version.

Oh right - umbrelOS 1.6 and 1.6.1 were not tagged as releases, as they were primarily for Umbrel Pro only.

is there a special trick to keep my apps installed via ssh (e.g. Midnight Commander/BTop/etc) after restart?

My Intel NUC10 with Umbrel 1.5 shows that 1.7 is available now… So in six days of this post, we went from Umbrel 1.7 Beta1 to Stable Release? My “umbrelOS Beta Program” is turned off.

That’s correct, what’s your point?

Well my point was, in general, six days is pretty quick from Beta1 to Final Release for software companies.

Any plans to expand Shortcuts? I’d love to make a shortcut that start a terminal window and runs a command

Got stuck while Restarting Window, why do the updates bring so many times issues … would be nice if an update could run smoothly

What hardware are you running Umbrel on? I’ve never had a single issue on any of my Bee Link NUCs. Umbrel has been absolutely flawless for the best part of 3 years.

Just FYI 1.7.1 broke my Bitcoin Knots node so i had to go back to 1.5

Config : Pi4 8GB

You’ve been in this forum long enough to know that some people have issues when upgrading, it’s funny that you’re the same that said “what’s your point?” just a couple of replies ago

Solved: in the end I uninstalled the BTC Node app (along with the others, of course) and reinstalled it.

I updated Umbrel to 1.7.1 and Bitcoin Core has been stuck for almost half an hour with zero connections. I restarted everything and nothing changed. After one hour I restarted only Bitcoin Core and I still have zero connections. What can I do?

Yeah I still dunno what your point is. If you run vanilla Umbrel it just works.

Apparently not always, but thanks for your opinion

PS: I’m not the one you asked “what’s the point” before.

I’m confused. Just buy a mini PC and flash Umbrel. Pi’s seriously lack the computing power needed for basic stuff nowadays.

It seems the problem is not just on Rpis, this is happening on NUCs too.
