New features

  • Backups: umbrelOS can now automatically back up all of your files, apps, and data to another Umbrel or a NAS on your network, or an external USB drive.

  • Rewind in Files: Time travel through your backups to restore specific files and folders from any point in the past.

  • Network mounts in Files: Mount network drives and shares, like another Umbrel or a NAS, and browse them directly within Files.

  • External storage (amd64): External USB storage is now supported across all amd64 (Intel or AMD) devices and the Umbrel Home.

  • Additional bug fixes and performance improvements.

Arriving in umbrelOS 1.5 this October. Public beta now available for all users running umbrelOS on:

  • Umbrel Home
  • Raspberry Pi 4 and Pi 5
  • All other supported devices

To try it out, go to Settings > Advanced settings, and enroll into the umbrelOS Beta Program.

Note: Please make sure all your apps are updated to their latest versions so they work seamlessly with Backups.

Super nice, this is a very good update. I always wanted to back up my Umbrel in case my hard drive gives out

Hi @mayank

could you please clarify the requirements for the USB backup?
I tried using a USB thumb drive, but it’s not being recognized.
Is there a specific file system required? Do we need to format the drive before using it, or will Umbrel handle the formatting automatically?

Thanks,

Thomas

Looking forward to when the confidence in Umbrel Backups expressed on x is equal to the confidence in moving Umbrel Backups out of beta and into the main OS “in October” (ten days left).

Do you mean I can have a mirror server, another umbrel as backup? Always in my network or even on another lan?

I hope so too. Unfortunately, there’s little known about the beta’s status. I couldn’t find much progress information on the bugs discovered in the beta release. Even on the Umbrel Discord, I found nothing about the issues with the new Umbrel OS version 1.5.

I assume they’ll only roll it out to the main OS once everything is deemed code-technically sound. In that regard, it’s uncertain whether it’ll happen by the end of October.
