Compare Umbrel running on Pi5 versus Pi4

I am running Umbrel 1.5 (currently busy syncing - after having been dormant due to house moves, for 1.25 years) on two Umbrel Nodes, on Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, 8 GB RAM, with Argon One V2 enclosures, Samsung 2TB 870 QVO SATA3 2.5" SSDs in UGreen powered enclosures.

Considering upgrading to Pi5 with 16 GB RAM, in Argon one neo m.2 NVME case, with samsung ssd 9100 pro 4tb PCIe 5.0x4 M.2 2280 … That would cost about $1,120 for the two Pi5 “rigs”, pricing it out on Amazon…

If anyone has upgraded from Pi4 to Pi5 for their umbrel “rigs”, how BIG/MASSIVE is the performance boost? Was it worth the investment to upgrade?

I mostly used Umbrel in the past as a bitcoin node. I also had a lightning node running on one of the umbrel “rigs”, and not sure I will continue with that - was a good learning experience, but seemed more complicated than it should have been.

Putting that much money in Pi5, would it be more prudent to use a Nuc or mini PC of some kind?

had to google NUC, never heard of it… looks to be an Intel based CPU version of the Mac Mini computer… will have to look into that possibility as well… thanks for that option that I hadn’t considered…

It makes no sense for just a bitcoin node. A Raspi 4 is more than enough for that, and with your current 2TB ssd you should be able to run for a couple of years probably.
Also I’ve no idea why you would have 2 nodes but anyway it’s the same for both, you current config should be more than fine for the next couple of years, no need to waste money.

the reason for the two nodes was that at the time, a couple years ago, I thought I was going to use the second Pi4 for an old school video game machine (for my daughter). didn’t end up using it, figured 2 nodes contributes that much more to the bitcoin network than one, so converted it into a 2nd bitcoin node. one had a lightning node on it and I’m not sure I will continue running that as it seemed to be more trouble than what it was worth. a good learning experience as was setting up the node using the Pi4 to begin with - learned a metricButtTonne in the process, so that is a good thing… but you are right about it being a waste to upgrade to Pi5 at this point in thyme, so will probably Let It Be (for now) and be satisfied with running on Pi4s… but will probably not be satisfied always wondering how much more powerful the Pi5 rig would be… kinda like when I bought a Mustang Mach E and didn’t go with a GT, or buying a Bronco and not going with a more offroad model (Sasquatch option) or with a Bronco Raptor… wondering aloud how much better that next step I didn’t take would have been… coulda, woulda, shoulda… better to be satisfied with what I got versus always looking for grass on the greener side (something like that)…

I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with having 2 nodes, many people have 2 nodes maybe with different config, as you say, one with LN, with Core <v30, with Knots, or whatever.

But you wouldn’t notice any difference in changing to a Rpi5, especially if the nodes are already synced (or almost), even a quite old computer would be enough for running a node without any issue.

If you’re planning to use Umbrel with other apps than “just” the basic bitcoin node purpose, then that’s a different story, and upgrading to Rpi5 might make sense.

got it, understand… it’s all good… you running knots on yours? you like it versus standard bitcoin app? seen discussion on the advantage of knots over the standard bitcoin node on a couple youtube bitcoin channels…

Not at all, running Core v30 here, it’s important to see the disadvantages of Knots too, not only the “advantages”

FOMO is a real thing. I thought I was missing out on EV speed but after driving one, not so much. I prefer the sound and feel of an ICE vehicle any day! Pi4 vs Pi5 considerable difference on paper but real world applications, not so much.

good to know… sidebar => as for EV speed - acceleration 0-60 mph - hard to beat EV unless you spend a whole lot more (my non-GT MachE Mustang does it in 5.2 seconds, and the Mach E GT with performance package does it in 3.3 seconds)… agree that the sound of ICE sports cars like a Mustang GT - is REAL nice, and I am sure I would LOVE driving one of them…
