I’m using UmbrelOS 2.0 on an Umbrel Home with 2TB. I’d like to add an external USB drive (1.5TB) to the main storage. And then backup the total (2TB + 1.5TB) to another external 5TB USB drive. See screenshot. Will this be possible in the future, or is there a workaround to make this possible?
hey, you can use the extra drive, just not merge it with the internal SSD into one big storage pool. The “Full Storage” option doesn’t include USB drives.
The closest option in 2.0 is to move supported apps to your 1.5TB drive through App Settings → Storage, or keep files on it through Files. Moving apps requires an ext4-formatted drive, so back up anything on it before formatting.
The catch is backups: you can back up your Umbrel to the 5TB drive, but Umbrel’s built-in backups exclude external-drive contents, including app data moved there. You’d need a separate backup for the 1.5TB drive, so it wouldn’t be the single combined backup you’re after.
Not sure whether combining USB and internal storage is planned, but moving apps would at least help free up space on your internal SSD for now.
Yes, move supported apps to the external storage might clear some space. It’s not what I was looking for.
I’m hoping the Umbrel team is reading this and there might be a solution to this limitation in the future.
Replacing the internal 2242 2TB ssd with a 4TB one also makes no sense with the current prices.
