I am running my Lightning Node with various open channels on a Raspi 4 under Umbrel and with LND.
What do I do in case my Raspi 4 breaks down and I can’t/won’t set up a new Raspi? (This has NOT haüppüed yet but I want to be prepared)
This much is clear:
My channels will be closed at some point via ForceClose, my Watchtower will (hopefully) take care of it - and the coins will go on-chain again. And, of course, I have securely stored my seed words for the wallet, so I would only need to access the on-chain wallet. But but but but:
How do I get this access?
The 24 words are derived from Aezeed. As far as I know, only the BlueWallet app can do this. But but but but: Blue Wallet only generates bc1q… addresses - the Umbrel wallet works in taproot addresses, so bc1p…
When my first raspberry node broke down, due to several power outages. I tried using different wallets to have access to my funds through the seed to no avail. I tried Blue Wallet but could not find the proper derivation path/funds access, as it is definitely non-standard and did not find any of the funds. I later found about the Aezeed.
I had to re-flash my SD, re-sync the blockchain and wait to re-scan it to have the funds available.
Channels will have to be closed. Incoming Liquidity Lost.
I now keep a few nodes handy.
Yeah I see. I have an under-voltage supply before the Raspberry but that doesn´t help if it still bricks. Aezeed on BlueWallet works well but as mentioned it doesn´t provide Taproot addresses which the Umbrel LND is using. Vice versa the umbrel wallet works if I do send funds ONChain to a bc1q… address, derived from the same seed in Blue Wallet. But as soon as a channel is doing something onchain, all the funds are again on a bc1p… address format. To which Bluewallet doesn´t give me access.
I don´t like that.
Now - what heppens if my node breaks and the counterparty goess offline as well? The channel will not be force-closed automatically till infnity and my funds are lost?
A basic skill is to recreate your wallet on any platform. Just choose one you like (and even ones you don’t!) and practice recreating your wallet with them. Check that the addresses match across all the wallets. You should then realise that your wallet only provides the key to unlock your crypto. If you’ve backed up your seedphrases, derivation paths, PubKeys, passphrases etc, and stored those securely, then you don’t need to worry if your Pi or node breaks.
Oh wow, what a smart solution. I didn´t know that ……
Did you read my question and realize that this was the exact question? So please let me know the answer: Which alternative can create Taproot-adresses derived with Aezeed - so that I do have an alternative?
There are two ways to solve your issue, the hard way or the easy way. The easy way is is to not get too cute and use largely unsupported solutions. KISS will keep you out of trouble. Use solutions that are more mainstream. If you want to go the hard way for some particular reason, then typing a short, well drafted question into Grok will give you the answer in 5 seconds. I did that, and Grok came up with a number of solutions in a 5 page answer, in 5 seconds flat. Gotta love Grok! There are a few wallets suggested. I won’t post it all here, because of Grok’s lack of brevity, but you get the idea.
Let us know how you get on!
