First setup on Rspi4 with USB boot "failed to start external storage mounter"

I decided to give umbrel a try. I have a Rspi4 that boots from USB flash drive with a 1TB SSD. The Rspi4 SD card slot is left empty.

The setup to allow USB boot was originally done by following this

I imaged umbrel to the USB drive and gave it a go.
It boots, but I get “failed to start external storage mounter”, I cannot SSH to it, or access http://umbrel.local from other computers in my network.

Is the USB boot setup not supported?

external booting is not supported yet. I have no idea why.

I don‘t know why but it worked on my Raspberry Pi 4.

Had configured Boot order to be USB boot and flashed the image onto the SSD in my Argon case. Worked flawlessly. However the additional external storage I plugged in was not recognized.
