Sharing the results:
UmbrelOS 1.3 was installed and running stable for almost 2 months.
The apps: Bitcoin Core + Elects + Seafile
HW: mini PC 4GB+8TB SSD
After the upgrade v.1.4.2 was installed the system got frozen, no web access to Terminal.
It hanged completely after each of 3 following manual brute resets .
Results: Dead on arrival.
I updated mine yesterday, waited about half an hour and was not responsive (couldn’t access the web ui). Good old unplug and restart was all it needed.
I also have it installed on a mini pc, but only 2tb drive.
@ [franciscojs] Fantastic! Old unplug helped!!! Hard to understand …
Thanks!
No, the joy took place only for 10 min … then Web GUI frozen again, hanged.
Running the Umbrel home server (not RPI), upgraded 4 nodes to .2 flawlessly in a matter of minutes.
I’m trying to update via WEB interface, but no luck. Some processes take action, the system reboots and everything is the same. The system offers to update again. From 1.4.0 to 1.4.2.
RPi 5 16Gb RAM + MicroSD+M2 on 2TB
Update re the situation: Repair efforts and search for the solutions are too costly in time. Considering latest security recommendations by the serios youtubers covering the BTC nodes at Umbrel and other similar solutions, I decided to run only BTC relevant apps and strengthen protection. Then downloaded UmbrelOS v1.4.2 ISO file, from github, installed it from the scratch (e.g,. lost previous data) + added Bitcoin knots (instead of BTC core) and Lightning node. No other apps just dedicated HW+SW to support main net community! This is personalized approach to minimize any disturbance and potential security issues.
The recommendation: Use ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, etc. for consulting about best approaches and solutions for these issues.
Updating the update a week ago.
The full reinstall from the github ISO file for UmbrelOS 1.4.2 was made sucessfully and teh system begun running well. To avoid any issues and just keep strict focus on the main idea: own BTC node support only Bitcoin Knots was installed from apps and it began working well however slow synching the whole blocks till the and for 5 days!. CPU 4 threads load variations were between 7%-75%. RAM use up to 3 GB from 3,8 available.
The access to the Umbrel was through local LAN cable connection to local IP address and the relevant http:// from the notebook in the same LAN.
After the full synk the message appeared about new version of Knots and being sure about predictability of this simple update I clicked on a button Install in GUI Apps.
The result: after the update Web access was lost, image frosen, no data about CPU load, RAM use, etc. avaibale. Just dead.
Having no options I had to reboot by brute force using the PC button start. It rebooted and can be controlled by the local monitor connect to miniPC, but it did not helped to present anything at WEB interface GUI. Dead for sure always after 5 attempts.
Now 2 questions:
Question 1. To UmbrelOS developers: The last experiment was absolutely clean, simple and had no interventions into the system. I have long experience of SW development and understand the complexity of the Umbrel Team work under limited resources. Highly appreciate their dedication to open source ideology. However, cannot understand such version release policy that results in publicizing erroneous versions which do not help to reach business success but just spoil all efforts made.
Question 2 to customers purchased UmbrelHome server: What is your experience? Do you have similar situations?
Thanks to all who can share their opinions in a constructive and concrete way!
I believe most of the issues I read about here are not related to the turnkey Umbrel hardware/software sold by Umbrel. I did upgrade 4 boxes; once new out of box, and once to the dot 2 release – without any issues.
I have updated to 1.4.2 a few day ago and Knots says starting forever. All apps won´t start correctly due to Knots hanging.
crud, is that on the umbrel home or self build?
It’s on a virtual machine. I had some trouble updating before as well. But on earlier versions the mender terminal command helped get the job done.
In the last 2 updates it worked via GUI as well.
But now suddenly the Bitcoin apps got unresponsive.
Help! I just tried upgrading my Umbrel Home Mini PC (actual HW from Umbrel) to 1.4.2 and it was stuck on the RESTARTING screen for about 30 minutes. I eventually pulled the power on it and powered it back on. But now it is not reachable and none of the apps are running. How do I get my Umbrel back online?
[UPDATE] So it looks like it DID update to 1.4.2, however, I can no longer access it via it’s IP number anymore? i.e. http://192.168.2.100 no longer works - even though I can see in my router config it has been assigned that IP (I set it previously). When I PING umbrel.local, i only see what I think is the IP6 Reply?

Any ideas why I can no longer access my Umbrel via its IP4 number?
[Update] 2025-06-02
Bitcoin Knots synchronization ended at 100% this morning after 5 days of running.
After this historic event I decided to add Electrs as a second app @ UmbrelOS 1.4.2
Cheerfully installed and it begun running & synkin and I left it in state of happiness.
In about 30 min decided to check how things are and notices no activities, the synk value was 18% not changing. Feeling trouble clied on BTC Knots icon and … no response, clicked on Umbrel GUI: Dead again.
Clicked Reboot: No response, Dead again.
This is just for informing the community about the realities of UmbrelOS apps.
The mini-PC HW is ESC LIVA Z2. It is fully capable of running Debian 12** with good hardware support expected out-of-the-box and overall it is a suitable and compatible mini PC for Debian 12.
Can you confirm that you tried to run Bitcoin Knots on a turnkey Umbrel HW connected to Electrs and it was fine?
Guys I have the same issue, cant connect anymore - Tried: Restart / Terminal / Reflash. And the best thing no support that helps. We have no access to our server we need help asap
Another observation of the UmbrelOS 1.4.2 + Knots + Electrs running experience:
After the situation described in previous post, I switched off the device, it rebooted and I witnessed the alive Umbrel GUI at the Brave browser of my notebook (connected to Umbrel running@miniPC in LAN).
The Knots began restoring sync from 99% to 100%. Having a dual boot I switched to Ubuntu desktop 24 to some tasks and meanwhile decided to check the status.
Knots reached 100% and I clicked Electrs icon @ GUI.
The app became running and showing sync progress.
After I finished my work at Ubuntu, I rebooted the notebook to login to Windows 11 and opened the local Umbrel connection in Brave under Windows back.
The result: No connection, tab link circling … dead.
Again! It looks like a fate.
Final conclusion after repeating the the procedure described 3h ago:
UmbrelOS v.1.4.2 hangs after Electrs is launched and connected to running Bitcoin Knots. THIS is for SURE!
