Hi there, first of all big up for UmbrelOS and the Umbrel Home. I just got mine in and allthough i really want to setup Jellyfin etc, i’m now running in the fact that you cannot really connect a NAS to the default storage. I have my nas linked to a default Umbrel folder via fstab and cifs, but that’s not really how i prefer to set things up. Especially since the photos app wont find any photos in subfolders that way.

Is there a rough timeframe for the “official” NAS connection for photos and or the storage manager? I rather hold off setting up Plex / Jellyfin / Photos etc untill i know that it can pull and store data from my NAS officially.

\*Side info, i’m running a Synology NAS

Hey! You don’t need to wait for Plex/Jellyfin. In umbrelOS 2.0, open Files and click the + next to Network in the sidebar to add your Synology share using its IP address and NAS login. No fstab edits are needed.

Then go to the app’s Settings \> Storage \> Access to your folders to give Plex/Jellyfin access to your media folder on the NAS. You’ll still need to select that folder when setting up the library inside Plex/Jellyfin. This keeps the media on your Synology rather than making the NAS part of Umbrel’s internal storage.

The built-in Photos app is a separate case, unfortunately. Its “NAS or network share” source is still marked “Coming soon”, so connecting the share in Files won’t automatically make Photos index it. I haven’t seen a public ETA for that yet, but it shouldn’t hold up your media server setup.

This looks great, but did not work for me. I have a synology nas and I get an error message:

Add network share failed: Command failed with exit code 32: mount -t cifs [//xxx.xxx](https://xxx.xxx) mount error(95): Operation not supported. Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) and kernel log messages (dmesg)

Thanks @aidencole . Before going into the app and do all the setup, changing the settings first was key here. So that one is ticked off.

Really looking forward to a proper NAS connection in the photos app. Somehow my umbrel was indexing all my files from the nas via cifs, but after a reboot everything is gone again.

Somewhat off topic; it also index my RAW files which it didnt need to do. And it also could not deal with those files. And especially with live photos the thumbnails couldnt be generated, they stayed blurred. Also when clicking a live photo i still got a low res photo somehow?

Ah nice, glad the app storage settings sorted that part out!The photos disappearing after a reboot sounds like the manual CIFS mount isn’t coming back. Changes to /etc/fstab don’t survive a reboot on current umbrelOS, so that would explain why Photos could see them initially and then lose access. It doesn’t necessarily mean anything was deleted from the NAS.For the RAW files, if you keep them in a separate folder, you can exclude that under Photos → Sources → This Umbrel → “All folders except…”. That’s a folder exclusion rather than a filter for RAW files specifically. For the blurry Live Photos, I’d try copying one original photo and its matching .MOV file into a folder on Umbrel’s internal storage through Files. Keep the originals on the NAS, then let Photos finish processing the copies. If those still look blurry when opened, that points to something separate from the NAS mount. Were these exported from Apple Photos, or synced to the Synology another way?

Jip I noticed, haha. Bummer though. I’ll just wait untill the official integration follows. Manually excluding all raw folders would be a massive undertaking though, so hopefully they’ll figure something out. As well as the whole blurry photos thing. I bought an Umbrell Home to … for once take the easy route on things 😉 Thanks for thinking along though!
