I have a Raspberry Pi 5 (16GB) with a [Penta SATA HAT](https://radxa.com/products/accessories/penta-sata-hat/) and 4 Samsung SSD 870 EVO 1TB disks. I installed umbrelOS and I can see that they can be detected in storage manager

But when I try to create a RAID (Failsafe), I get this:

Is this by design? To force buying umbrelOS own hardware? Or is this a bug? The disks are formatted.

Yeah, this is a limitation of the Raspberry Pi build, not a restriction to make you buy Umbrel hardware imo, since FailSafe is available on x86 systems (Intel/AMD), including DIY machines.

FailSafe uses ZFS, and the issue is compatibility with the Raspberry Pi kernel. ZFS can run on some Pi setups, but that doesn’t mean it’s supported with the kernel umbrelOS ships. Umbrel team has been clear that they don’t want to carry custom kernel patches to make it work at the expense of stability and reliability, especially for something that’s meant to protect your data.

So formatting the SSDs won’t fix this, unfortunately. Your Pi can detect the disks without being able to use them for FailSafe. The Pi installation guide mentions the limitation, though it would definitely help if the storage screen explained why: [Installing umbrelOS on Raspberry Pi | umbrelOS Support](https://umbrel.com/support/install-umbrelos-on-your-own-hardware/installing-umbrelos-on-raspberry-pi)
