Connecting Electrum Issues

My Bitcoin node finally finished sync’ing after 2 days… then I installed ElectrumX from the Umbrel App store and it’s been sitting at this message for 5hrs now, no sync’ing message yet… any thoughts?

ElectrumX does need to build its own index after Bitcoin finishes, but that “Connecting…” message alone doesn’t tell you whether it’s making progress or stuck.

I’d check the logs before restarting or reinstalling. In Umbrel, go to Settings > Troubleshoot > App, select ElectrumX and download its logs. If the block heights keep increasing, leave it running. If you’re seeing repeated errors, paste the last bit here, removing any passwords or other private details.

Also, is pruning enabled in your Bitcoin Node settings? ElectrumX needs the full blockchain, so that’s worth checking too.

Thank you for ALL this detail, I will go look at the logs…

I do know that pruning for the bitcoin node was set to 5GB as suggested in the YT video i watched on setting it up and the syncing took two days and already my provider said I was close to 1TB of data already… I’ve never gone over before, lol! Are you saying I need to let Bitcoin Node do a full sync? I may have to upgrade the hard drive as it’s only a 240GB… this is why the 5GB sounded so great…as of this morning both ElectrumX and Electrs are both still saying connecting…

Ah, the 5GB pruning setting explains it. Your Bitcoin node already downloaded and verified the whole blockchain, but it deleted older blocks along the way to save space. Pruning saves disk space, not the data used during the initial sync, which is why your internet usage still shot up.

ElectrumX and Electrs both need those older blocks, so neither will work with your current pruned setup. You’d need a larger drive and pruning disabled. Unfortunately, that means downloading the blockchain again, so I wouldn’t change that setting yet with your data cap nearly reached. A 240GB drive won’t fit it; I’d go for a 2TB SSD to leave room for the blockchain, indexes and growth.

You can also keep your current setup as a pruned Bitcoin node. It still fully validates Bitcoin, so those two days weren’t wasted! You just won’t be able to use these Electrum servers with it. If you do upgrade, pick either ElectrumX or Electrs; you don’t need both.
